Materials & Notes

Finished size with DK yarn: each shape is 8cm tall approx.

Tips

  • You can just work into the top loop of the starting chains to save time. The first & last row/round will be stitched together and won’t be seen.
  • For decreases, work into the front loops only to avoid leaving gaps.
  • If you would prefer more chunky shapes, work 4 rounds even instead of just 1 in the middle of each shape pattern. This gives the shapes a rounder, thicker ‘bubble letter’ appearance.
  • Gauge is not important here so you can use any weight yarn. Your shapes will just be a slightly different size. Make sure you change the hook size too. I suggest using a hook a bit smaller than the standard size stated because decorations work better with a dense fabric.

Abbreviations

NB this pattern uses US crochet terms. The equivalent UK crochet stitches are listed after each term.

  • R – row/round
  • RS – right side facing
  • WS – wrong side facing
  • st – stitch(es)
  • ch – chain
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sc – single crochet stitch (UK: double crochet)
  • sc2tog – single crochet 2 stitches together to reduce to 1 stitch (UK: double crochet 2 together)

Thread an embroidery needle with your bind off tail & start to stitch the first & last rounds together.
Do this bit by bit, adding small amounts of stuffing into the “tube” being formed as you stitch.

Crochet half of the x in rows

R1: ch 18, skip 1st ch, sc in 17 st, turn.
R2-6: ch 1, sc in 17 sc, turn i.e. work 5 rows even.
Bind off leaving a long tail for stitching.Long strip for half the x

Crochet the other 2 parts of the x in rows

R1: ch 8, skip 1st ch, sc in 7 st, turn.
R2-6: ch 1, sc in 7 sc, turn i.e. work 5 rows even.
Bind off leaving a long tail for stitching.
Make the 2nd short part in the same way.2 short bits for other half of x

Assemble the x shape

Stitch the first & last rows together, adding some stuffing in the tube as you go, as per the square instructions above.
Thread your needle with a length of yarn & work your needle up & down through the stitches at each end to gather and close both ends of the tube. Repeat this for just one end of both of the shorter parts.

It’s easier to attach the pieces if you see it as a plus sign instead of an X. Lay your longer piece horizontally. Place the open end of a shorter part above the middle 3 stitches. Stitch around the open base stitches to attach it to the mid side of the longer piece. Repeat on the opposite side to complete the plus sign shape. Now just rotate your finished piece & you have your X/cross icon.Lay long piece horizontal and attach short parts above and below at 3 mid stitches (left), rotate to become x (right)
