The hat is a basic beanie knit as a flat piece and seamed down the back. There’s rib at the start, a stockinette body & k2tog decreases for the crown.
The scarf is a bit more involved combining garter stitch, stockinette and purl rows to keep things interesting.
Designed for UK store Wool Warehouse’s Yarnsmiths Freespirit Aran yarn which comes in pretty multicolours, you can substitute with any worsted or aran yarn that knits to the standard gauge of 18 stitches & 24 rows.

If you prefer knitting hats in the round, try this fancy ribbed hat & scarf set also from Wool Warehouse.
UK designer Monica Russel has used a clever rib stitch variation to create a chic matching set.
The scarf is a 2 row pattern repeat, and Monica recommends placing a stitch marker on the front so you know which row is which. It’s also easy to adjust the width of the scarf by adding a multiple of 3 stitches.
The hat uses the same fancy rib stitch for the wide brim, and then it’s simple stockinette knitting round and round for the rest, with k2tog decreases to shape the crown.
Designed for Yarnsmiths Merino Aran yarn which is super squishy & superwash, any standard gauge worsted or aran yarn should work well here. You’ll need 3 small 50g balls for the hat and 5 for the scarf.
Return to the Forest Aran Hat & Cowl
| Pattern Type: | Hat: main part knit in round but cabled brim knit flat first. Cowl: straight needles. |
|---|---|
| Pattern Level: | Intermediate |
| Pattern Sizes: | Hat: fits 21in head. Cowl: 4.7 x 28.4 inches |
| Yarn Weight: | Aran or Worsted |
| Needle Size: | 5mm (US 8), 4mm (US 6) for cowl rib ends. |
For something a bit different, how about this cosy cowl & matching hat designed by Roisin Graham. I’m loving that cabled hat brim!
The cowl is knit as a flat piece with 3 buttonholes at one end of the rib. The main cable pattern is an 8 row repeat.
You start the hat by knitting a narrower band of the same cable pattern as a flat piece for the hat brim, seaming the edge when done. Then you switch to knitting in the round, picking up stitches all around the cable brim and then knitting the rest of the hat in stockinette.
However, you could easily modify this hat pattern to knit it on straight needles instead. Just don’t seam the brim, pick up your stitches along the edge and knit a flat piece of stockinette. Then seam all down the back at the end to turn it into a hat.
Roisin used Stylecraft Special Aran for this pattern, a budget friendly easy care acrylic that comes in a whole rainbow of shades. But you could use any aran or worsted yarn that knits to the standard 18 stitches & 24 rows gauge.

DK Hat & Scarf Patterns
Frankie Unisex Hat & Scarf
| Pattern Type: | Straight Needles |
|---|---|
| Pattern Level: | Low Intermediate |
| Pattern Sizes: | Hat: Adult S/M (47cm) & M/L (50cm), Scarf: 68 x 10 inches |
| Yarn Weight: | DK / 8 ply / Light |
| Needle Size: | 4mm (US 6) |
Love the look of ribbing but not all the pesky purling? You can knit this hat and scarf without doing a single purl stitch!
You simply slip stitches & move your yarn forwards & backwards to get a fancy rib effect instead.
This reverse slip stitch rib is a 2 row pattern repeat, used for both the hat and matching scarf.
The hat is knit as a flat piece and seamed down the back. The crown decreases involve slipping stitches, moving your yarn back & forth & passing slip stitches over (PSSO).
So there’s a bit going on but still a lot of repetition. That’s the only reason I’ve marked this as a low intermediate pattern rather than easy.
Note the pattern mentions also needing smaller 3.25mm needles for the hat, but I can’t see them used anywhere – hopefully that’s the only glitch!
Designed for West Yorkshire Spinners ColourLab DK wool, which comes in a whole rainbow of shades, you can use any DK yarn that knits to the standard 22 stitches and 28 rows gauge with 4mm needles.
Fisherman’s Rib Men’s Hat, Scarf & Mitts
| Pattern Type: | Straight Needles |
|---|---|
| Pattern Level: | Intermediate |
| Pattern Sizes: | Hat: adult man (fitted), scarf: 79 x 9.5 inches, mitts: man size, 8.75 inches long |
| Yarn Weight: | DK / 8 ply / Light |
| Needle Size: | 4mm (US 6) |
For another purl free ribbed option, try this free pattern from Sirdar.
There’s no purling here because it’s all knit in Fisherman’s Rib stitch, which works by knitting into stitches in the row below. There’s multiple ways to do Fisherman’s rib and the version here is a 2 row pattern with all knit stitches and no purls at all!
Fisherman’s rib is super squishy and warm, but takes longer to knit because you’re making a double layer fabric. It’s a bit tricky understanding what knitting into the row below means, so here’s a good video demo so you can quickly see how it works:
This free pattern (number 10627) is by famous UK brand Sirdar. They triple check every pattern & I’ve always found their patterns clear and that they turn out well. They mostly do paid patterns, so it’s a real treat to get one for free!
The hat and hand warmers are knit as flat pieces and seamed so you can knit the full set with straight needles.
Designed for Sirdar’s Country Classic DK yarn, a wool & acrylic mix, you could use any DK yarn that knits to the standard 22 stitches and 28 rows gauge with 4mm needles.
You’ll need either a free Ravelry account or a free Sirdar account (which signs you up to Sirdar’s mailing list) to download this pattern.
Seeded Scarflette & Beret
| Pattern Type: | Beret: knit in the round, Scarf: straight needles |
|---|---|
| Pattern Level: | Easy. |
| Pattern Sizes: | Beret: Adult – 19.5 inch brim stretches to 23 inches. Scarf: 4.75 x 49.5 inches |
| Yarn Weight: | Sport / DK / 8 ply / Light |
| Needle Size: | 4mm (US 6) and 3.75mm (US 5) for beret brim |
Fancy a change from boring beanies & standard scarves? Try your hand at knitting a beautiful beret or sophisticated skinny scarf with this free pattern designed by Rachel Brockman for Universal Yarn.
They’re both knit in seed stitch (or moss stitch) where you alternate between k1p1 and p1k1 rows to make a lovely dotted texture. So simple but so effective.
The scarflette, with its triangular ends, is very fashionable and reminds me of PetiteKnit’s iconic Sophie Scarf pattern. This is an easier knit though. You start with 3 stitches, increasing at each side to make a long skinny triangle, then knit even for as long as you want, before decreasing to make another long triangle for the other end.
The beret is knit in the round and there’s 6 k2tog decrease points evenly around the crown which make a lovely swirl pattern on the top of the beret. You end by knitting a short bit of i-cord for the centre point – the perfect finishing touch.
Universal Yarn suggest using their Uni Merino 4 ply yarn held together with a strand of Rico Design Super Kid Mohair Loves Silk to make it extra luxurious.
These 2 yarns held together should be similar to sport or DK weight with a gauge of 21 stitches in seed stitch on 4mm needles. So you could substitute with a single DK or sport weight yarn, especially since exact gauge is not vital for a slouchy beret.
The pattern suggests you only need 2 small 50g balls (or 1 big ball) to make both items.
Elodie DK Colourwork Hat, Scarf, Cowl, Mitts & Mittens
| Pattern Type: | Knit in the Round |
|---|---|
| Pattern Level: | Intermediate |
| Pattern Sizes: | Finished Hat: 20.5 inch circumference. Scarf: 7.5 × 61.5 inches. Cowl: 24.75 × 8 inches. Wrist warmers: 7 inch circumference. Mittens: 8.5 inch circumference. |
| Yarn Weight: | DK / 8 ply / Light |
| Needle Size: | 4mm (US 6) for hat, scarf & cowl (3.25mm for hat rib). 3.75mm (US 5) for wrist warmers and mittens. |
Make a matching hat, scarf, cowl, wrist warmers & mittens with these free knitting patterns by renowned UK designer Sarah Hatton.
If you’re brand new to colourwork, the mittens only have a little bit at the wrists – a perfect way to try out stranded knitting. Or indeed, you can just keep it simple and knit plain mittens instead.
While the colourwork looks impressive, it’s only a 4 stitch repeat so very doable. Plus both a chart and full written instructions are included, so you can follow whichever you find easiest.
The patterns are designed for WYS Pure DK wool, but any standard DK yarn that knits to 22 stitches and 28 rows with 4mm needles will work here.
I like the way you can pick and choose what to make depending on how much yarn and time you have. You only need 1 small ball of each colour to make wrist warmers or a hat, 3 balls in total to make mittens or a cowl and 8 balls to knit a full scarf.
Even the scarf is knit in the round here, as a double layered tube, so that’s why it takes so much yarn. But that means there’s no wrong side, so you see pretty colourwork whatever way you wear it.
